STEM in Libraries

Course Overview 

The role of the library has rapidly changed - while we were never only a repository of books, our library mission is moving increasingly towards community spaces and community learning. Libraries are places of exploration and investigation - a natural place to support STEM - however it's easy to feel like an 'accidental STEM librarian' whether through lack of experience, confidence or support.

This 4 week course will help you understand the resources and skills needed to develop strong STEM programming and collections for your library.

This is a 4 week professional development unit. You will receive a Certificate of Attainment upon the successful completion of this course.

Course Content

This course will examine ways to attract, engage and support community members in a range of STEM activities and programs.

You will specifically examine:

• A variety of programming ideas aimed at client groups of differing ages and interests, including integrating STEM into traditional activities such as storytime
• Planning & marketing STEM sessions or programs
• Delivering sessions - interacting with clients and facilitating learning environments
• Methods to encourage the development of supported and connected learners
• Linking programming to curriculum, citizenship, and the idea of lifelong learning
• Building STEM collections

You work in a public library or a school library and:

• Are interested in developing a new or existing STEM programs or collections
• Wish to improve your confidence with facilitating STEM sessions

Course Delivery

Contact with facilitators will be through online forums on Moodle (the online Learning Management System used by ALIA for this course).

Participants will connect with each other through forum discussions.

There are no specific times you need to be available.

The time investment required is approximately 5 hours per week, depending on the individual.

The course can be completed in 4 weeks but as it is developed to be self-paced, it can be finished earlier or later depending on your learning styles and needs. If you wish to vary the usual time taken, please discuss this with your teacher.

No specific hardware and software - other than a computer with internet access - is required for this course.

Our training partner for this course is Gary Lom.

Gary is currently Training lead at ALIA. Previously, as a TAFE teacher in Library and Information Studies, he delivered vocational education, both online and face to face, for 16 years. Prior to that he worked for 18 years in a variety of public, academic and special libraries.
