Event Description
Are you ready to turn ethical theory into library practice? Join us for Let's Get Ethical, the new ALIA Schools Code of Ethics development series! Spread over six weeks, you will participate in three interactive online sessions, a fortnight apart. During these sessions, we will dive deep into the ALIA Code ofEthics to help you translate it for your unique school context.Rather than just discussing concepts, you will learn how to curate relevant resources, navigate challenging censorship and collection decisions, and embed sustainable practices into your library. Participants will leave this series with acompleted, editable Code of Ethics document that is tailored and ready to use in their school library! Let's build our solid ground together.
These sessions are not being recorded and a commitment to attend all three sessions is preferred. There are limited spaces, so register early.
Session 1 - A STRONG FOUNDATION
In this session you will start to build the foundation to a customised Code of Ethics and will examine the ways you create access to the library and its collections for the school community. How do you uphold privacy and transparency in everyday operations? And what do you need to know about Open Access, Intellectual Property and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property.
Session 2 - THE PILLARS OF PROFESSIONALISM
In session two we will delve deeper into more challenging ethical situations that arise in the school library. How do you deal with book challenges and how do you professionally manage ideas and values that differ from your own? There are sometimes no easy answers, however your customised Code of Ethics can be a critical guide. You will leave this session with a greater understanding of your own active professionalism and how the school library represents the wider community and is a place of respect and integrity.
Session 3 - THE ROOF OF RESILIENCE
In the third and final session, you will top off your customised Code of Ethics with actions that make the school library an enduring, vital and resilient part of any school community. You will articulate the actions that lead to the impactful support of literacies and sustainability in the school environment. There will also be a surprise for people who have attended all three sessions.
