The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) has for many years celebrated Library and Information Week (LIW) during the month of May, with the aim of building awareness of the library and information sector, and promoting all types of library and information services in Australia.
However, in recent years, we have found that the growing popularity of National Simultaneous Storytime, held on the Wednesday of LIW, has often drawn focus from the week’s wider campaign and messages. Feedback received has also indicated that mid-to-late May is not the optimum time for university libraries to engage their students, given that this corresponds with the final weeks of the Term 1 teaching calendar.
So, as of 2022, Library and Information Week will be held on the week starting on the final Monday in July.
For the next three years, the dates will be:
- 25-31 July 2022
- 31 July – 6 August 2023
- 29 July – 4 August 2024
These dates have been carefully selected to avoid clashing with school and public holidays, or with any other currently planned major campaign weeks in Australia, and as close to Health Information Week as possible. It is anticipated that, by holding the week toward the beginning of Term 2 in the university calendar, that there will be a stronger level of engagement from the university library sector, and ALIA aims to develop LIW themes that can be more strongly applicable in academic and special libraries. With the bulk of ALIA’s events and campaigns currently held from February to May each year, this change also creates the opportunity for ALIA to more evenly schedule our annual calendar, and National Simultaneous Storytime will continue to occur in the second half of May.
Please add these dates to your library calendar. We hope that these new dates will create new opportunities for more library and information services across Australia to connect with this annual campaign, as a more inclusive week that promotes our professional work in all of its sectors.
