Get Involved

Take a look at some ideas on how to celebrate Library Lovers' Day and be inspired! Celebrate #libraryloversday on 14 February 2018.

Ideas for your communication channels

  • Encourage your patrons to spread the #libraryloversday by having a competition for the best social media post using the #libraryloversday hashtag along with the twitter handle of your library.
  • Change your library’s Facebook or twitter avatar and/or banner to the avatars and banners available in the resources section below.
  • Post your own love letter to a library on your social media channels.
  • Use a service like Storify to capture all of the awesome information coming through about library on social media on library lovers’ day. Make sure to check out and use the hashtag #libraryloversday to see everything going on for Library Lovers' Day!

Ideas for your library

  • You will be able to print out and put up the Library Lovers’ Day Love Letter Posters once they are released. We are creating posters from love letters to libraries penned by various Australian authors, you will have plenty to choose from!
  • Entice your library patrons to write their own love letter to the library. Put them up on the wall around the poster and show off the love for your library. Don't forget to share these with us by email to or by using #libraryloversday on social media.
  • Include your users by handing out bookmarks or little chocolate hearts to library visitors who visit through the week of Library Lovers' Day. Scroll down to the resources section to check out the free bookmark download that you can use.
  • Tempt users to have a 'blind date' with a book and venture outside their comfort zone! Wrap it in brown paper (tied up with string) and encourage them to take one home as something new and exciting.
  • Create a Library Lovers' Day display of romance books. Decorate the display with red balloons, flowers, or streamers. Don't forget to share your results on social media using the hashtag #libraryloversday so we can all see what you've accomplished.
  • Become a matchmaker! Pop a sign on the circulation desk ‘We'll help you find the book of your dreams’ or even ‘The book matchmaker is in’.
  • Create a 'book crush' display where users can add their favourite book from your collection and share the passion that they have for it with other library users.
  • Create a pamphlet of romantic things to do on Valentine's Day. Personalise it for your community by including details of local places to go and things to see. Perhaps there's a shady nook in your park or a place by the river. Consult with your colleagues; you'll have a list before you know it. Don’t forget to include items from your library like books of poetry to read out loud, romantic films, romantic books, romantic CDs or even a cookbook to help make dinner.
  • Use your skills to create eye-catching displays centred on the author Love Letter Posters. Bring together all things romantic — romance novels, DVD's, CD's. Link romantic books that have made it to the screen. Wedding photos old and new — who knows what’s lurking in your collection.
  • Dress up for the day and persuade your colleagues to join in — a touch of red is universally considered romantic.
  • Consider holding a special event with guest speakers. Maybe hold a reading with a focus on love or arrange for a romance writer to visit or even host a workshop for romance writers.
  • Create Library Lovers' Day hampers and send them to your local media, politicians, councillors and decision makers in your organisation and community. Tie them up with lots of ribbon for a romantic effect. Accompany them with some information about Library Lovers' Day and information about your library — how many people use it, how often, and how much the library means to them!
  • Give the gift that lasts a lifetime; enrol someone you love as a library member.
  • Love notes — Canberra Girls' Grammar school celebrated Library Lovers' Day by leaving red hearts in their favourite books for the next reader to find outlining what they liked about it and why.
  • Byron Bay Library hosted speed dating with a twist — 'Read Dating: Dating by the book at your Library', where the starting point or 'ice breaker' was to bring your favourite book and discuss it. Along with 'meet trays' as a lucky door prize.
