Librarians and Dragons - PD and career planning

Primary tabs

ALIA, with the support of The City of Gold Coast Libraries, presents"Librarians and Dragons"!

This event is a great opportunity to identify, develop and communicate the essential transferable skills we all need in the ever-changing information industry.

This is a FREE PD event for ALIA members.

Workshop aim

This workshop will help LIS professionals identify skills they already have and how they can transfer these skills to the job they aspire to have - but in a fun way!

Librarians and Dragons uses gamification to promote professional development for librarians, and to encourage a different way of thinking about the skills that we can bring to the table to enter the industry or progress within it.

It brings together ideas and concepts from games, such as Dungeons and Dragons and escape rooms, to offer an alternative way of viewing our professional development.

The workshop will take participants on a quest through a library experience, using pre-developed characters, before tasking everyone to develop their own character profiles.

The profiles focus players on their abilities (transferable skills), legendary items (qualifications) and completed trials (experience). It encourages us to begin thinking about other ‘quests’ we, as members of the GLAMR community, can go on to ‘level up’ our careers.

Who is this workshop suitable for?

This workshop is suitable for anyone working, or wishing to work, in the GLAMR sector.

What to bring

Just a positive mindset and your sense of fun! Easy!

Refreshments and pizza will be provided.

Workshop presenters

Maddy Medlycott AKA the Librarian

Maddy is currently a Liaison Librarian for the School of Law at QUT and a Research and Reference Librarian for Crown Law Library. She graduated with a bachelor of Science, majoring in Zoology, in 2009 and then joined the full time workforce at an Insurance Brokerage. She completed her Masters in Information and Library Studies in 2016. Since starting her Masters degree, Maddy has worked at QUT Library in a variety of roles as well as moving to London for two years and working as a HR Coordinator at Madame Tussauds and the London Dungeon.

After travelling the world (or as much as she could do in two years), Maddy returned to QUT Library and continues to work there at the Law Library as well as working for the Crown Law Library. Maddy is also a Regional Coordinator and Social Media Coordinator for the ALIA Students and New Graduates Group. She is very passionate about members of the LIS community being able to grow and develop professionally and uniting this with her love of gamification by creating exciting and innovative workshops, such as Librarians and Dragons and Shut Up and Eat Cake.

Michael Hawks AKA the Dragon

Michael is currently the Liaison Librarian for the School of Accountancy, the Graduate Business School and the Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies at QUT. He graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Information Management and Librarianship, and has spent the last 5 years working in academic libraries, including QUT Law Library, Griffith University and the University of Western Australia; and at the State Library of Queensland as the QULOC Graduate Librarian.

He also holds an Honours degree in English and Communications from the University of Western Australia, writing his thesis on the intersection of game design and the reality TV show Survivor. Michael is always looking for the opportunity to turn a wide variety of interests into work related tasks (though this is mostly to justify spending all day googling pictures of dogs in hats).
