Are you passionate about the challenges and opportunities that artificial intelligence (AI) presents to library and information services (LIS)? Do you believe the LIS sector has an important role to play in encouraging ethical approaches to the use of AI?
ALIA is setting up an Artificial Intelligence Working Group and is seeking expressions of interests for members.
This group will lead ALIA’s work to develop sector-wide guidance and best practice policies to promote ethical, operational, and strategic engagement with AI in Australia’s libraries and related information workplaces.
Purpose of the Working Group
A Terms of Reference and work plan will be developed by the group in consultation with ALIA Executive and approved by the ALIA Board. In general it is expected that members will collaborate to:
- Identify emerging challenges and opportunities for the LIS sector presented by AI technologies

Review existing literature and resources relating to AI and LIS

Identify where these is a need for, and if appropriate develop, principles, policies, and implementation frameworks to guide responsible engagement with AI by LIS
- Support workforce capability and promote trustworthy, transparent and human‑centred AI practices across the LIS sector
All activities of the group will have a strong focus on ethical AI and be guided by the principles set out in the ALIA Code of Ethics for the Library and Information Services Workforce.

- The Working Group commitment is for a 12 month term, with potential for a further 12 month extension
- Open to all ALIA personal members across all career stages and sectors
- We will meet once a month and work collaboratively between meetings on various initiatives
Who Should Apply
We’re looking for 5-12 members to establish the initial Working Group. You don’t need to have a formal AI background – just an enthusiasm to support and strengthen the LIS sector in relation to AI. Experience in technology strategy, digital transformation, or AI governance is desirable but not required. Diversity of perspective, background, and institution type will be actively sought.
