Australia’s next Census will take place on Tuesday 11 August 2026.
It’s important that everyone takes part to make sure Census data reflects our changing communities and helps shape planning for local services, including libraries, schools, healthcare and transport.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to work with libraries across the country to host information and fill-in-the-form sessions. Please be aware that your library may be approached by the ABS about the possibility of hosting one of these sessions.
These sessions help people from all cultures and communities learn why the Census matters, ask any questions about the process, and get help from a Community Field Officer to complete their Census form.
Community Field Officer opportunities
The ABS is recruiting over 1,600 Community Field Officers for the 2026 Census.
Community Field Officers make sure everyone feels safe and respected when completing the Census.
As part of their duties, they might run sessions in libraries and community centres to support people to complete the Census.
These temporary jobs are available across Australia, from major cities and suburbs to regional towns. The work is flexible and close to home, with hours available on weekdays, weekends and evenings.
Who the ABS is looking for
The ABS is looking for people with experience supporting:
• people living with disability
• people experiencing homelessness
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
• people who speak a language other than English.
Experience organising and running events in the local community is also desired.
To support people to participate in their preferred language, the ABS is encouraging people who are proficient in languages other than English to apply.
If you know someone with volunteer experience, a social service background, or an interest in earning extra money please share this opportunity with them.
These temporary jobs may also be right for library staff who are looking for extra hours on a short-term basis.
