Funding opportunity now open for citizen science corners in public libraries

Do you work in a public library and would love to implement a Citizen Science Corner and invigorate STEM programming in your library? We have a great opportunity for you!

ALIA, in conjunction with the Australian Citizen Science Association (ACSA) has received funding from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) to support the establishment of Citizen Science Corners in 100 libraries across Australia.  ALIA and ACSA are now seeking Expressions of Interest from libraries who want to host a Citizen Science Corner.

To support Expressions of Interest we held an information session, Introduction to Citizen Science in Public Libraries Workshop where Dr Bridie Schultz from ACSA and Trish Hepworth from ALIA ran through everything you need to know about applying for and creating a Citizen Science Corner in your public library.

Each successful library will receive:

  • $650, to cover the costs of a Citizen Science Kit and supporting activities.
  • Information pack prepared by ACSA, including all the information you need to set up a vibrant Citizen Science Corner.
  • Free online training webinars for library staff.
  • Access to real-life scientists who can provide advice and even visit your library for events related to the Citizen Science Corner.

In return each library commits to:

  • Setting up a Citizen Science Corner.
  • Purchasing a Citizen Science Kit (from money provided).
  • Organising an event or other input from local scientist (ACSA will support the connection of libraries with scientists).
  • Providing feedback on the project
Citizen science supports public participation in scientific research, where members of the community to help with collection and analysis of data, in collaboration with scientists and field experts. Hosting a Citizen Science Corner in public libraries is a way to increase STEM literacy, skills and interest, builds community and supports Australian scientific advances.

We look forward to receiving your Expression of Interest before 30 April 2025!
