From the Regional Engagement Manager: a great year for engagement

Here we are in 2024! I took a short break, which of course involved some library tourism. The family and I popped into the new narrm ngarrgu Library when in Melbourne, where my kids explored the rooftop garden before settling on the couch to play Nintendo - allowing me to chat with my librarian friend from the NLS9 days, Ben Manolas. I was also impressed by Picton’s lovely library (Waitohi Whare Matauranga) when visiting Aotearoa. Two top examples of well-located, vibrant community hubs.

I’m excited about the upcoming opportunities for engagement. On Sunday February 18th, ALIA will be running a Fair Day stall, where we will be letting the public know that libraries welcome everyone and for many queer people, libraries are critically important safe spaces. We will also be selling fabulous ‘Library Love’ t-shirts and bandanas for dapper dogs.

If you're Sydney based and interested in visiting us at Fair Day, or have library programs, services, spaces or collections you'd like us to promote for your library or ALIA Group then there's still time to complete this form.

OR if you’re Sydney based, but won’t see us at Fair Day, we would love to catch-up with library and information folk over dinner and drinks. Come to the courtyard space of the Toxteth Hotel, on Saturday February 17th connect with the ALIA CEO, ALIA Board Directors Amy Walduck and Kathryn Eyre, and others and chat about sector plans for 2024. RSVP HERE.

I’m also excited to be the Volunteer Coordinator for ALIA National 2024, where we’re welcoming volunteers who have previously been underrepresented at our conferences. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity for ALIA Members who are studying, have recently graduated or are part of an ALIA Group, to actively participate in the conference, work with great people, network and learn. There will be a range of volunteering duties and we can tailor based on accessibility requirements. Complete a volunteer EOI before February 23rd.

To close, I’d like to thank our ALIA Groups for providing their 2024 events and activities forecast – there is plenty to look forward to this year. The ongoing energy and commitment of our Groups contributes to a strong and vibrant library and information sector.
