About Media Literacy
“Media literacy is the ability to critically engage with media in all aspects of life. It is a critical form of lifelong literacy that is essential for full participation in society.” This is the definition adopted by the Australian Media Literacy Alliance (AMLA), newly-formed in 2020 to champion media literacy education for all Australians.
The Australian Library and Information Association is a founder member of AMLA, chaired by the National Film and Sound Archive’s Jan Muller, along with ABC Education, Museum of Australian Democracy, National and State Libraries Australia, Queensland University of Technology and Western Sydney University.
About the Event
Young people’s enthusiastic engagement with social media puts them at greater risk from the fake news and misinformation that populates the internet, alongside the true content which makes for such a rich learning environment. Helping young people navigate the digital environment is something which library and information professionals in schools, TAFEs, higher education and public libraries are well positioned to achieve.
ALIA has worked with AMLA partners to put together a half-day virtual conference for any library and information professional or other media literacy champion, who wants to develop a deeper understanding of the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ of this emerging discipline.
The conference takes place on 3 September 2020, 12pm to 4pm (AEST).

Registration costs are $250.00 for ALIA members and $300.00 for non-ALIA members.
