ALIA SPECIAL LIBRARIES SUMMIT, FRIDAY 2 SEPTEMBER

Adelaide Convention Centre, 9am to 1pm - a satellite event to the ALIA National Conference

Purpose

For the ALIA Special Libraries and Information Services Advisory Committee and other associations active in the specials space to meet to:

  • Identify shared issues and opportunities
  • Prioritise research and other activities that could support joint advocacy and professional recognition for the sector
  • Potentially agree a draft action plan for working together over the next three years.

Participants

An inclusive event for approximately 20 participants from special library-related associations, with other leaders from the sector - chair, former ALIA President Julie Rae.

Format

9am Welcome and introductions
9.15am Open discussion about the research and evidence we already have concerning the work of special libraries; what it tells us to date, especially about value and impact and where the gaps lie. 
10.30am Morning tea
10.45am Professional recognition – an ALIA Health Libraries Australia representative explains how HLA is working to put health information workers on a par with other health practitioners through recognition as a self-regulating profession.
11.00am Advocacy highs – representatives from GRAIL and CSIRO speak about their successes, riding the wave of government and corporate changes to come out on top.
11.20am Feedback, questions and discussion about matters arising from the case studies.
11.30am Work together to identify emerging themes around advocacy, professional recognition and any other topic arising from previous discussion; brainstorm activities including research, partnerships, direct approaches and campaigns, to further the specials agenda.  Prioritise activities based on need, likelihood of success, capacity, probable engagement of partners and availability of funding. Create the basis for a draft action plan for 2017-2020 for organisations to take back to their executives for further discussion and agreement by the end of 2016.
