New Librarians' Symposium XI

New Librarians' Symposium XI

Event Information

NLS aims to provide a low cost and high value symposium specifically geared towards students and new professionals from around the country. The inspiring event allowed future movers and shakers of the Australian LIS industry to come together and discuss future possibilities and ways to get there. NLSXI encourages attendees to exchange knowledge, to explore ideas and to expand their professional circle, and their thinking.

The ALIA NLSXI theme is “CONNECTED'.

Library staff are connected, linked, intertwined, engaged, and united by our profession. We are the connectors within our communities, forging relationships, networks, partnerships, collaborations, and alliances. Being connected is essential for new library staff as they navigate the evolving landscape of the library and information sector, and the national association, ALIA takes responsibility for enabling connection for new library professionals as they navigate the evolving landscape of the library and information services sector.

Event Delivery

The symposium will take place on the virtual platform Zoom Events. A couple of days prior to the symposium you will be given access to your virtual profile. Sessions will be recorded and available for six-months post-symposium.

Keynote Speakers

Sarah Firth

Sarah Firth is a cartoonist, artist, writer and graphic recorder based on Wurundjeri Country, Melbourne. Threaded with humour and curiosity, her work weaves together personal questions, wicked problems, the more-than-human world, philosophy, silly thinking and science. Sarah's comics have appeared in Eisner Award-winning and Ignatz-nominated anthologies, and her debut graphic novel Eventually Everything Connects won the Emily Toth Award, a Gold Ledger, was shortlisted for The Prime Minister's Literary award and selected as one of The Best Graphic Novels Ever by Refinery 29.

Freedom to Read Panel

This panel brings together frontline library staff to share their experiences upholding intellectual freedom in Australian libraries. In an era of increasing challenges to books and programs, the discussion explores real-world situations and outcomes. Panellists will discuss what worked and what didn’t and offer practical advice for colleagues facing similar pressures. Moderated by ALIA’s CEO, Cathie Warburton, who has led the Association’s work to support libraries facing book challenges, this panel provides essential insights for maintaining libraries as trusted community spaces that ensure equitable access to information and resources for all people. Hear from our panellists Iurgi Urrutia, Soraya Majidi and Shannon de Silva.
