ALIA HLA Lunchtime Seminar: Getting a job in a health library - how to maximise your chances through 'work integrated learning' programs

This session will include a panel of recent graduates who will talk about their student placements and graduate cadetships in health libraries.

Come along and hear about how their 'work integrated learning' experiences affected their employment prospects and career trajectories. Health libraries may also learn about how these types of programs can be mutually beneficial and may offer solutions to their workforce planning dilemmas.

Presenters' Bios

Katie Bagnall

Katie Bagnall worked in environmental impact assessment and management for about twenty years prior to embarking on her new career path in information management. She undertook a Master of Information Management through Curtin Open University on a part-time basis, completing the degree in December 2020.

During her 3-week practicum placement at the WA North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS) King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) medical library in 2018, Katie formed a keen interest in health science librarianship. During this placement, Katie was fortunate enough to shadow four experienced librarians, who were very generous with their guidance of all aspects of their roles. Katie applied this knowledge to volunteer and paid roles in school libraries and then completed contract work at KEMH (9 weeks) after graduating. Recently, she has also worked part-time under contract in two other WA Health Service hospital libraries.

Dee Mahoney

Dee Mahoney studied for her Diploma of Library and Information Services at Sydney's Ultimo TAFE in 2021. As a former journalist of more than 30 years, and a local of Ryde in Sydney's northwest, Dee says her work placement digitising old scrapbooks of articles relating to the Ryde Hospital was a perfect fit and a highlight of her studies.

Dee started work as a library assistant at Australia's oldest continuous leading library, at the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, the week after she finished her placement in November. In January this year she became a library technician at St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill.

Earlier this year she received the 2021 ALIA Student Award, and in May she was named Technology and Business Services Student of the Year (Sydney region) in the TAFE NSW Excellence Awards 2022.

Eunice Ang

Eunice is the Library Cadet at Monash Health Library. She has worked and volunteered in public, academic and health libraries in Singapore and Australia and is a recent graduate of the Master of Information Management program at RMIT University. Eunice is passionate about working with and supporting healthcare professionals in their research and education.

Gaby Haddow

Gaby Haddow is an Associate Professor in the Libraries, Archives, Records and Information Science area at Curtin University. Her previous Professional experience was in an evidence-based nursing centre and an academic library. Gaby was co-editor of the Journal of the Australian Library and Information Association for seven years and has served on two conference committees for IFLA's Library Theory and Research Section. Her research has focused on the communication of research to practice in LIS, research support in academic libraries and research evaluation. More recently, she co-edited the book Assessment as Information Practice with colleague Hollie White. A list of Gaby's publications is available on Google Scholar.
