Keynote Speaker

Melissa Brown

Melissa Brown is the Sustainability Librarian at Altona Library, looking after the EnviroCentre. She joined Hobsons Bay Libraries in March 2017 after a career in environmental education, having worked for Zoos Victoria, Parks Victoria, Melbourne SeaLife Aquarium and the Gould League. She has qualifications in Conservation Ecology (Environmental Science) and Secondary Education with teaching methodologies in Geography and Biology. In her current and previous roles, Mel has extensive public speaking experience regularly presenting to members of the public and hosting events for both adults and children. The highlight of her speaking experience was in a previous volunteer role where she hosted an event with Dr Jane Goodall and the Jane Goodall Institute of Australia. When not at work, Mel can often be found surrounded by plants - whether that be in her indigenous grassland meadow, her growing edible backyard garden with her chooks, or her ever expanding indoor plant collection. When not in lockdown, she loves to explore natural places, often hiking and partaking in forest therapy activities. She loves camping with her partner and her greyhound, and has a need to always explore somewhere new, seeking out wildflowers and First Nations history.
