Shellharbour City Libraries
New build or refurbishment: New Build
Budget: $14 million
Architect: Design Inc, Lacoste + Stevenson and Turf Design Studio
Project Completed: 04/01/2018
City Library is Shellharbour’s new central library building, opened in January 2018 as the centrepiece of the new Shellharbour Civic Centre. It offers 2000 square metres (2095m² gross floor area) of vibrant library space all at ground level, open seven days. The library features contemporary collection areas, a playful children’s area, a spectacular balcony, technology access, meeting & program rooms and a dynamic range of seating options for reading, studying or lounging.
Visitors to City Library are welcomed via a generous 600 square metre community foyer that links to a café, a 350-seat auditorium and the City Museum, as well as Council’s customer service area, Chambers and administration centre – a co-location that facilitates diverse internal partnerships.
City Library fronts the Civic Square and is a vantage point for viewing the Civic Centre’s public art works. To the rear of the library, large windows overlook a green landscape and provide stunning views up to the Illawarra escarpment.
The $14 million City Library build was managed by Shellharbour City Council’s Civic Centre Project Control Group in conjunction with Savills Project Management. Joint architects were Design Inc, Lacoste + Stevenson and Turf Design Studio. The project was built by ADCO Constructions.
