The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) is pleased to announce that Wednesday 22 May 2019, marks the 19th National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) event, an annual advocacy campaign hosted by ALIA.
Each year, a picture book is selected for a simultaneous read-aloud event held in libraries, schools, pre-schools, family homes, childcare centres, bookshops, children’s hospitals and communities across Australia. 2019 marks the second year that NSS has taken place in Australia and New Zealand.
This year’s book is Alpacas with Maracas, written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove. In 2018, Hickory Dickory Dash was read by author Tony Wilson at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and was shared by more than 1,062,230 readers in more than 8,255 event locations.
‘NSS has by far become our favourite time of year – partnering with ALIA to get mums and dads, families, educators and communities connecting with children through books and reading is at the very heart of what we do at Scholastic. Congratulations to ALIA on such a wonderful and successful initiative’, David Peagram, Managing Director, Scholastic Australia and New Zealand, said.
This year ALIA invites everyone to join the ALIA Board of Directors, Members and some actual alpacas at ALIA House at 10:30am AEST 22 May 2019, for our NSS 2019 event. There will be children's craft activities, morning tea and opportunities to interact with the alpacas. You can also register for free to attend Scholastic Australia’s NSS 2019 event at the State Library of NSW where there will also be alpacas.
If you’re hosting, or thinking about hosting, your own NSS 2019 event there are free resources for you to use on the day. CleverPatch has created some activities including a craft ebook and a guide to making book themed windchimes, while Scholastic Australia has created teachers’ notes. You can also download free ALIA resources including flyers, letterhead, and social media tiles.
Digital presentations of the book will be emailed to all registered participants on Monday 20 May, so please ensure that you register before then to receive the resources. The digital presentations will include an audio reading of the book; a pdf version of the book; access to the Story Box Library; and a video of a reading in Auslan and Key Word Sign of the book.
We would love to see your displays and celebrations on the day on social media with the hashtag #NSS2019. For more information on National Simultaneous Storytime 2019 or to register see the ALIA website.
About National Simultaneous Storytime
Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 19th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. Thank you to those who have made National Simultaneous Storytime 2019 possible: author Matt Cosgrove; publisher Scholastic Australia; the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa; our creative partners Story Box Library and CleverPatch and ScopeAust; and our NSS 2019 sponsor, James Bennett.
