Following the success of the inaugural Australian Library Design Awards in 2017, which saw 33 entries and five outstanding winners, the Australian Library and Information Association has launched the 2019 awards, seeking the best new library architecture and interior design that Australia has to offer.
The awards are presented in partnership with the Australian Public Library Alliance, the Council of Australian University Librarians, Architecture AU, Raeco and the State Library of Queensland. The winners will be announced at a special one-day conference on 14 March, 2019, in Brisbane, as part of the Asia Pacific Architecture Forum.
ALIA CEO Sue McKerracher said: 'The awards showcase the best in contemporary library interiors and exteriors in Australia. They also celebrate the investment in libraries made by institutions, corporations, local, state and territory governments.'
There are four categories for public libraries, academic libraries, school libraries and special libraries, and there is an ALIA Members’ Choice award, voted for by library and information professionals. Any library in Australia, recently built, renovated or refurbished in the last two years can be entered for the awards. Nominations close on 30 September and the shortlist will be announced in December.
