Safe Harbour provision changes to the Copyright Act

Wednesday 6 December 2017, Canberra: ALIA is pleased to see that the Australian Government has introduced the Copyright Amendment (Service Providers) Bill 2017 that extends safe harbour provisions in the Copyright Act to the disability, education, library, archive and cultural sectors. The bill was introduced into the senate on 6 December 2017. ALIA Members and the ALCC have long supported this cause and have worked hard to see this change. See here for the media release on the bill from Minister for Communications, Mitch Fifield.

These changes matter because they extend the protection previously only given to some internet service providers to those in the disability, education, library, archive and cultural sectors. See here for more information on why this change to safe harbours is important.
