Kate Torney OAM has held the position of CEO of the State Library of Victoria since November 2015. Since that time, she has led the library from strength to strength, the most recent achievement being the refurbishment of large areas of the library. That refurbishment earned the library the National Exemplar Award in the 2021 Australian Library Design Awards. Kate is also a member and former chair of National and State Libraries Australia, and a former chair of GLAM Peak, representing Australia’s galleries, libraries, archives and museums.
Kate’s admirable ongoing work was recognised as part of the 2020 Australia Day Honours List where she was recognised with a Medal (OAM) ‘for service to the broadcast media and to the cultural sector.’
Prior to her work in libraries, Kate worked as a journalist, first for commercial broadcasters and then for the ABC where she stayed for more than 20 years. At the ABC she was a reporter, producer, executive producer and editor and then Director of News and Current Affairs.
