ALIA is pleased to announce that Viv Barton has nominated and formally been declared elected to the position of Vice-President (President-elect).

Following the ALIA Annual General Meeting on 21 May 2019, Viv will assume the role of Vice-President until 2020 when she will become the President for one year.

Current position:

Service Lead - Libraries & Lifelong Learning, City of Stirling.

Previous positions:

  • 2000 - Service Lead - Libraries & Lifelong Learning (position title change in 2018, from Manager Library Services), City of Stirling.  Responsible for the strategic and operational management of the Library Services Business Unit, providing the library/museum with vision and leadership in the development and implementation of customer focussed City-wide programs, services and activities. (Six libraries plus museum, 65FTE, $9m budget).

  • 1982-1999 A series of professional appointments progressing from Student Librarian and Assistant Librarian, to Branch Librarian working in WA public libraries at the Cities of Nedlands, Canning, Wanneroo and Stirling. 

Professional activities:

  • 2018- President, Public Libraries WA and Executive Committee Member 1998-2013 and 2015-2018

  • 2016- WA Public Library Representative, Kay Poustie Scholarship Committee

  • 2014-2015 WA Public Library Representative, National and State Libraries Australasia (statistical returns)

  • 2012- Board Member, Department of Information Studies, Curtin University.  Representing WA public library sector

  • 2011-2013 Executive Committee Member, Strategic Library Partnership Agreement Steering Committee, representing WA public library

  • 2011-2013 Chair Operational Management Group, working with public librarians and SLWA officers on state-wide operational library

  • 2012 Member, Public Libraries Advisory Committee ALIA involving marketing, policy development, and reviewing national public library standards

  • 1999 Director, Public Libraries Australia, promoting public libraries at a national level.  

What I’d like to accomplish:

An Associate ALIA Member since 1985, I am a passionate advocate for libraries, and have been professionally active in the library and information sector throughout my career.  I am strategically focussed and innovation driven, have strong leadership, change management and business administration skills, and actively seek new and innovative methods to improve and deliver relevant programs and services for library customers.  As a Board Member, it will be an honour to represent the library profession, working with like-minded colleagues across all library sectors on the strategic development and promotion of library and information services and the library profession at a state and national level.
