An update on our Professional Pathways initiative

Canberra, 23 December: As 2021 draws to a close the Professional Pathways team would like to extend our sincere thanks to the hundreds of ALIA Members who have given their time, energy and expertise to advancing the project.

Professional Pathways is a significant investment in the people that run our world-class library and information services, and we could not deliver it without the support of our Members.

The project has come a long way since its announcement in 2019. An intense period of consultation with over 450 participants from across the LIS sector culminated in the Professional Pathways consultation draft, (2020) the Professional Pathways Summit (2021) and  final consultation report (2021). Recently the team has had our heads down as we worked with Dr Gillian Hallam on the foundational Technical Report.

The report ensures that ALIA has a sound and reliable evidence base to support the decisions about alternative professional pathways. We know that it’s important that the way forward aligns with current and emerging developments in the LIS field nationally and internationally, that it resonates with similar initiatives in other professions, and that it takes into account the evolving trends in professional learning.

The Technical Report, is currently undergoing final consultation and edits, and will be published in January 2022.

Please stay tuned in the first quarter of 2022 as we open consultations on the frameworks to support the new pathways into library and information services, and the support career-long learning and development needs of all library and information professionals.
