Program

We want this conference to be an exciting and innovative experience and to do that we asked for your help. The conference program will be a collaborative, member-built program and we invited you to help curate the program by proposing speakers, topics and provocations for sessions.  

We received a great response to the invitation and we want to thank everyone who submitted their ideas and suggestions. The program committee were inspired by your ideas and have used them to create three sub-themes that will shape the conference program –  

Future Communities – preparing people, customers and communities for the future 

Future Libraries – Creating inclusive and accessible digital libraries and services 

Our Sustainable Future – Building sustainable workplaces, workforces and services.

Speakers

Stefan Hajkowicz

Stefan Hajkowicz is a principal scientist in strategy and foresight at CSIRO, Australia. In his job he helps people explore the future and make wise choices. Stefan also works with governments in regions and cities to help them identify and develop emerging technology-sector industry clusters. Stefan leads the Data61 Insights research group and during his 22-year CSIRO career he has delivered hundreds of research and consulting projects to industry and government clients. He has been appointed to professional foresight groups at the OECD and World Economic Forum. Stefan has a doctorate in geography from the University of Queensland and postgraduate qualifications in economics. His book “Global Megatrends” is a CSIRO Publishing best-seller and he has over 4,500 citations (h-index of 33) on Google Scholar in the fields of foresight, strategy, geography and economics. 

Rebecca Giblin

Professor Rebecca Giblin is an ARC Future Fellow at Melbourne Law School, where she works at the intersection of law and culture. She is Director of the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia (IPRIA) and leads the ARC-funded Author’s Interest (authorsinterest.org) and eLending projects, as well as Untapped: the Australian Literary Heritage Project. Her new book Chokepoint Capitalism (with Cory Doctorow, 2022) explores how we can recapture creative labour markets from Big Tech and Big Content to get artists paid. Cory Doctorow

Cory Doctorow (craphound.com) is a science fiction author, activist, and journalist. His latest book is CHOKEPOINT CAPITALISM (with Rebecca Giblin) nonfiction about creative labor markets and monopoly. His latest novel is ATTACK SURFACE, a standalone adult sequel to LITTLE BROTHER. He is also the author HOW TO DESTROY SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM, nonfiction about conspiracies and monopolies; and of RADICALIZED and WALKAWAY, science fiction for adults, a YA graphic novel called IN REAL LIFE; and young adult novels like HOMELAND, PIRATE CINEMA and LITTLE BROTHER. His first picture book was POESY THE MONSTER SLAYER (Aug 2020). In 2023/4, Tor Books will publish two more science fiction novels for adults: RED TEAM BLUES and THE LOST CAUSE; and Verso will publish THE INTERNET CON, a nonfiction book about monopoly and radical interoperability. He maintains a daily blog at Pluralistic.net. He works for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, is a MIT Media Lab Research Affiliate, is a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Open University, a Visiting Professor of Practice at the University of North Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group. Mike Furlough

Mike Furlough is Executive Director of HathiTrust, an organization supported by 200 members drawn from the academic and research library community, which is dedicated to collecting and preserving the scholarly and cultural record. Furlough oversees the full range of its programs and services, which include a trusted digital library of over 17 million volumes, providing collections access for print disabled users, large-scale copyright research and investigation, innovative support for text and datamining, and the establishment of a distributed print archive among its members.  

Since joining HathiTrust in 2014 he has overseen a dramatic expansion of its collections, services, membership, and staffing, and supported development of its business and operational practices to help the organization move from its startup phases to become a resilient and critical element in the information ecosystem that supports teaching and research. In 2016 the American Library Association recognized HathiTrust’s CRMS Project (Copyright Review Management System) with the L. Ray Patterson Copyright Award, recognizing the program’s efforts to undertake systematic copyright reviews of over 1 million works. In 2020 HathiTrust rapidly deployed the Emergency Temporary Access Service to provide continuity of access to academic library collections that were rendered inaccessible due to the Covid-19 pandemic, making the service available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.

Furlough’s work has historically focused on the intersections of emerging technologies and scholarly practices. His research and publications have focused on how libraries and universities develop new organizational supports for changing scholarly communication practices. Getting the Word Out: Academic Libraries as Scholarly Publishers, which he co-edited with Maria Bonn, was published by the Association of College and Research Libraries in 2015. From 2011-2013 he was a member of the faculty of the E-Science Institute, sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, and Duraspace, and he served as a member of the Modern Language Association’s Future of the Print Record Working Group.  Furlough currently serves as a member of the NISO Interoperable Systems of Controlled Digital Lending Working Group.

Prior to joining HathiTrust, Furlough was the Associate Dean for Research and Scholarly Communications at the Pennsylvania State University Libraries (2006-2014) where he established new programs to ensure the preservation and curation of original scholarship as well as traditional collections.  In his roles at the University of Virginia Library (1998-2006), Furlough developed and led digital scholarship services that supported researchers in the sciences, social sciences, and in the then-emerging field of digital humanities.  Before he ran away to join the library, Furlough studied American Literature at the University of Virginia. 

Vicki McDonald

Vicki McDonald AM FALIA, State Librarian and Chief Executive Officer, State Library of Queensland.

 Vicki McDonald is a key player in the transformation of the library sector in Queensland. As State Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of State Library of Queensland she understands the need for a strong, relevant and innovative library service. Her national and international experience led to her appointment as State Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of State Library of Queensland in 2016.  Vicki has also held leadership roles at State Library of New South Wales and Queensland University of Technology. Her career includes roles at public, academic and state libraries. She is the Chair of National and State Libraries Australasia (NSLA) for 2022 and 2023. Vicki is a Past President of the Australian Library Information Association. She has been very active in the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) since 2004 and held a number of positions. Vicki is currently IFLA President-elect for 2022-2023 and will become IFLA President in August 2023 for 2023-2025.
