Wollondilly Shire is predominantly a national park and rural area, with urban areas in fifteen towns and villages. Two-thirds of the 47,997 population live in the urban centres, and one-third in the rural areas. There are 16 townships altogether in the Shire and Picton is the administrative centre. The Shire encompasses a land area of nearly 2,600 square kilometres, of which about 90% is national park, bushland, water catchment or rural land, including gorges, ranges and plains.
Our population is predominately Australian born 83.1% and English speaking 91.2%, and our largest age groups are the 35-49 9,706, 50-59 5,910 and 5-11 4,798. The population is expected to increase at a greater rate than it has been over the next few years.
There are 16 primary schools, one public high school which is situated in Picton and a private high school in Tahmoor. The library provides these schools with out of school hours study.
Wollondilly Library Service consists of one central library building in Picton and two mobile library vans which visits 16 townships on a weekly basis.
