A great time was had by all, thanks ABC!
A capacity crowd of 50 librarians crowded into the ABC’s Ultimo Centre Library in Sydney last night for a special viewing of The Librarians. Thanks to the generosity of the ABC’s Content Services (aka library and archive services), we enjoyed a tour of the library facilities, learned about the work of the Content Services team, enjoyed a glass of bubbly, and then settled down to watch The Librarians. I heard groans, laughter, and the odd gasp as we watched, but will let others write a review. Suffice to say, as one viewer put it, “it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be, and I’ll be watching future episodes with interest to see how things develop.”
Unexpected highlights included having our photos taken in the foyer with Big Ted, a brush with fame when Julia Gillard walked in the front door at the same time many of us did, and taking home an ABC showbag. A big thank you to Mary Jane Stannus, Kate Burnham and Sal Russo from ABC Content Services, and to Alyson Dalby, ALIA New Grads, for a great night out! We’re just sorry there wasn’t room for the other 150 Sydney librarians who hoped to join us.

We had a good launch in Canberra too. About 50 of us shared the experience at the National Library where we dressed (well some of us) in pearls, cardigans, sensible shoes and glasses. Lots of laughs, a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and the Managing Director of the ABC, who happened to be at a dinner on the ground floor, came up and joined us and wished us the best.
Good to take the time to have some laughs - and everyone now has the word “librarians” on their lips!
