Questions to the writers
We have posed the following questions to the writers, Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope, and will let you know their answers when we receive them. We welcome more questions….
- We know your show is all about the characters (a “social satire” as you described it), but what made you choose a library as the locale for this series?
- How did you research libraries and librarians to develop the script?
- Did you think setting the show in a library would create as much interest amongst librarians as it has?
- Do you have a favourite library-related memory?
- What are you reading now?
- And finally, what do you really think of librarians?

You might find a few answers in this article from the Sunday Age.

The thing which struck me immediately is that the majority of the characters are men, when in fact over 80% of library staff are women. Dramatic license no doubt but why did the writers choose not to represent this distinctive aspect of real world libraries?

I loved the way Michelle arranged her article, by the way.

Love the show; and staff I work with ditto this as well. About time someone had the nouse to send our industry out to the public and in time it will kick the CHASERS off the top 10 listing on Auntie. Which this fantastic satire will no doubt do. Re Bruce comment 25th Oct ‘majority of characters are men’ dont worry, the writers arent Librarians so wouldnt be too phased about that, no doubt as this program continues its course of success we fellows will be phased out and more gals slotted in as the boys might go into different areas of Public Service Jobs. Just one thing though- I do hope the writers start selecting some patrons we in this industry have to ‘put up with’ (in a witty sense) on a weekly basis and not just those on the Net porn sites as there are far diverse patrons whom use our organisation where I work in those areas than that-
Cheers Rob…
