SCARE UP A GOOD BOOK


Haunted House / ghosts / monsters

 * Set up the library into a haunted house with dim lights, a rocking chair, scary dolls
 * Possibly even set up a bed in the middle of the room for the children to sit on while the librarian tells scary stories
 * Place scary monster toys under the bed to give a scary vibe
 * Use spooky sound effects
 * Jack-o-latern pumpkins, carve one out and stick a candle in it 
 * Skeleton in a closet
 * Fake spiders and spider webs hanging around the library
 * Use a fog machine to spray fog around the library especially when reading a scary story 
 * Ghost sounds

Witches

 * Set up a cauldron in the middle of the library. Provide all these digusting things like slime, dirty shoes, socks, string, toy rats, etc. and create a witches brew.

Scary animals

 * Snakes, crocodiles, spiders, sharks, lions, etc.
 * Create a jungle with vines growing from the walls

Monsters under the bed

 * bedtime stories, Monsters Inc. (film), picture books

Dinosaurs

 * Create an obstacle course / scavanger hunt through the library with footprints and plastic fossils and bones.
 * Hide plastic fossils and bones throughout the junior section of the library and give out clues to the children (about the location) for them to find them.

Campfire and scary stories

 * Set up the library into a campfire style with a fake campfire, tents, etc.
 * Have the children sit around the 'campfire' while the librarians tells scary stories or sings songs
 * Let the children sit on makeshift logs

Scary mummies - Ancient Egypt / Horror movies

 * Pyramids
 * wrap dolls in toilet paper
 * Pharoah
 * Mummy Dress Up Game: Divide the children into groups and have them wrap one person with toilet paper. Award prizes to those who can decorate the most creative. 

Mad Scientists

 * Turn the library into a science lab with display of jars, science equipment

Aliens

 * UFOs in the library
 * Shining bright lights
 * Toy aliens
 * Alien Dress Up Game: provide the children with aluminium, toilet paper rolls and other accessories to dress up themselves as aliens. Award prizes to the creative ideas. 

Robots

 * Robot Dress Up Game. Provide different material for the children to dress up as robots and award prizes for creativity.
 * Spray paint cardboard boxes and different material (pots, pans, plastic PVC pipes, duct tape, phone wire, buttons, etc.). As a whole group build a robot together.
