Member recruitment tips

Recruiting a new ALIA member can be easier than you think. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

  1. Become familiar with all the benefits of ALIA Membership
ALIA membership offers professional development programs, access to professional forums, networking and mentoring opportunities, copyright and industrial relations advice, credentials recognised by employers, and a range of savings on conferences and publications and our monthly news magazine inCite. You can also direct them to the ALIA website, to find out more about ALIA events, benefits and opportunities.
  1. Share your ALIA experiences
One of the best ways to recruit a colleague is by telling them a story about one of the ways ALIA membership has helped enhance your career. Whether it was an article you read recently in inCite, an idea you picked up at an ALIA event, a new skill you learnt through an ALIA PD activity or a new job you found through the ALIA's employment vacancies - share your ALIA experiences. It will really help convince them of the value of ALIA membership.

Is there someone you haven't seen in a while? Maybe a former member has let their membership lapse. Contact him/her and let them know that you miss them and the contribution they made. You can remind them of the benefits they are missing since their membership has lapsed.
  1. Provide the Recruit-a-Member Campaign application
Go to the Toolkit to find the template e-mail to send to everyone you want to introduce to ALIA membership.

You can add a section to this template to personalise with your own message about your ALIA membership experience or just introduce yourself. In this section you can include the website address of your ALIA Group to help give them more information about involvement in ALIA.

The application form includes a line for the recruit to include your name as the member who has referred them for membership. This line MUST BE COMPLETED for you to receive a discount off your next renewal.
  1. Follow up to make sure the application has been sent
All paid new member applications must be received no later than 27 February 2009, to count toward your recruitment effort.
  1. Send a Thank You and let them know you appreciate support for ALIA
A quick note or an email is always a great way to say "Thanks." And, as the ALIA referring member, you can be a career mentor as well.
