Immersed in Books

Marcus Robertson

At the Melbourne launch of the report Young Australians Reading on 30 April, champion swimmer Marcus Robertson gave the following address. Further information on the report is given in the News section.

Good morning ladies, gentlemen and fellow bookworms.

By way of a brief introduction, my name is Marcus Robertson and I am a swimmer with the Victorian Institute of Sport, and a student at Monash University studying my final year of Biotechnology and Microbiology. Next year I launch into medicine having deferred this course to pursue my swimming career, complete my science degree and learn to speak Japanese.

I have been invited along this morning to address you on my interest in books and reading. I can remember being able to read fluently before I started school, and coming from a family where both parents are teachers, I was immersed in books virtually from the cradle...

Marcus Robertson is a 23-year-old elite swimmer with the Victorian Institute of Sport, and is ranked fourth in the world for the 800m Freestyle short-course in 2000. He is also one of Victoria's premier open-water swimmers and surf lifesavers, having won nine consecutive open-water events and two state titles during the 2000/2001 season. He has currently deferred studying medicine until 2002, to complete a science degree in Biotechnology at Monash University.
