1998 - achievements and highlights
Progress towards new peak organisation
A leadership committee of ACLIS and ALIA at national level and intense co-operative effort at branch level led to the adoption of a Charter of Renewal and agreement to incorporation for our new organisation at an extraordinary general meeting of
members at the Biennial Conference in Adelaide in October.
ALIA 5th biennial conference
The South Australian Branch hosted our premier conference in October, with the theme: Adelaide 98, pathways to knowledge.
Australian Library Week
In May, the South Australian Branch also launched Australian Library Week in Adelaide, with the same theme. Former chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, Dr Lowitja O'Donoghue gave the oration. The ALW poster, The incredible
library, was a very popular promotional item on the Association's exhibition stand at the American Library Association's annual conference held in Washington DC at the end of June.
Indigenous communities online
ALIA organised the introduction of online information technology and training to five remote indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, Queensland and South Australia, as part of the Commonwealth government's online public access initiative.
Landmark pay case
Following strong lobbying from ALIA, the NSW Government chose 'librarian' as its preferred professional job category for consideration in the landmark State Pay Equity Inquiry. At the Government's request, ALIA provided consultancy services and
assisted in development of the Crown case to the Inquiry. The presiding judge ultimately accepted all of ALIA's arguments and formally ruled that the work of librarians is seriously undervalued.
