PublishingThe Association's premier newsmagazine inCite canvassed the following themes in 1997:
A revamped and totally redesigned Australian Library Journal was published quarterly in 1997. A strong editorial focus from John Levett ensured a consistent supply of high-quality articles to complement the fresh design format. ALJ editorial, article abstracts and book reviews appear concurrently on ALIAnet, the Association's website. Following consultation with Australian Academic and Research Libraries [AARL] editor, Dr Peter Clayton, AARL is now printed and distributed through ALIA national office. A redesign of AARL will take place in 1998. AARL webpages have been redesigned to offer a more streamlined flow of information. The 1997 ALIA Handbook and two new publications, Courses in library and information studies 1998 and Salary scales 1997/8, have been produced. Other publications are mentioned in the education and training, indigenous people in the sector, industrial relations and Australian Library Week sections of this report. Association financesAt the end of ALIA's financial year on 31 December 1997, the Association had an operating surplus of $33 716. A summary of income vs expenditure in the table indicates both the Association's income sources and where expenditure was allocated in 1997. Comprehensive and audited financial statements appear in the latter section of this report.ALIAnetALIAnet continued to extend, expand and improve in 1997. Enhanced communications capabilities in the form of new software and extra staffing allocations have broadened the reach and scope of ALIAnet activities. Use of ALIAnet as a leading information resource has grown at a staggering rate. In 1997 ALIAnet's webpages alone received, on average, more than 2100 requests per day - or more than 766 500 requests during the year. E-mail traffic accounted for more than half of the data flow, to over 120 subscribers, from ALIA national office staff to ACT Branch members to clients renting space for their own business. The ALIAnet website guestbook continued to reflect users' satisfaction with the expanded services, recording nothing but positive comments about the range and quality of information offered. The site is now well-known both within and outside the sector, and enhances the Association's ability to provide a forum for information flow. To assist in communicating with members, and to demonstrate an open approach to the discussion of Association business, GC Online was launched in the first quarter of the year. GC Online was created with the sole purpose to electronically deliver all ALIA General Council Meeting agendas and papers. This has significantly improved member access to meeting information, and has been instrumental in bringing efficiencies to bear on the general distribution of all Council-related information [each ALIA General Council meeting adds over 300 pages to ALIAnet]. Another significant addition to ALIAnet in 1997 was the establishment of a number of new listservs, or electronic mailing lists. An extensive collection is now available, and instructions for the creation of new lists are to be found on the website also. All electronic lists on ALIAnet are prefixed with the 'ALIA' acronym, further enhancing the profile of the Association. Note that almost all ALIAnet lists are open to the general public. In addition, ALIAnet is being increasingly used as the Association's primary communications vehicle: speeches, presentations, branch and section newsletters, press releases, publications and policy documents are, almost without exception, being posted on ALIAnet as they happen, offering members have timely and immediate access to ALIA activities and news.
