Taylor and Francis' response to the article in Conversation
News about our journals
The ALIA board is pleased to announce that from 1 January 2013, Australian Library Journal and Australian Academic and Research Libraries will be published by Taylor & Francis under its Routledge imprint.
A sustainable future
ALIA's two highly regarded journals, Australian Library Journal and Australian Academic and Research Libraries provide an essential vehicle for publishing scholarly research. Although some associations have pulled out of journal publishing entirely, the ALIA board has been concerned to ensure the future for these journals as an integral part of the association.
Based on sound principles
The board has been actively seeking a publishing model that will be affordable, will recognise the call for more open access, will give LIS academics a prestigious outlet for their work, will provide members with access to scholarly research and will bring Australian research to the attention of a wider audience internationally.
Contracting with Taylor & Francis
After 12 months spent reviewing the current arrangements and exploring the many options available, a contract has been negotiated with Taylor & Francis, licensing the publisher to produce and distribute ALJ and AARL.
The decision to go with Taylor & Francis was based on an independent consultant's report. Five other commercial publishers, two of them Australian, were considered, but failed to match the terms offered by Taylor & Francis. A fully open access route (freely available issues with no Author Publication Charges) was also considered, with both journals becoming online only, but the cost to the association would have been too great to go down this route.
Being part of the LIS journal project
We have agreed with Taylor & Francis that our journals will be included in its LIS journal pilot project, which has been specially developed to address the call for a move towards open access. The framework of the pilot is outlined in the press release from November 2011:
"Routledge, the social science and humanities imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, is pleased to announce a two-year pilot initiative for the library and information science research community, allowing contributors to its library and information science journals to retain the copyright to their work and to post it within their institutional repository without an embargo period. Under this scheme, an author may post the peer-reviewed version of his or her article (although not the published pdf) into their institutional or subject repository (although not commercial servers or for resale) immediately following publication, so long as the original place of publication is referenced and a URL link is made to the Version of Record on Routledge's website."
Details of the policy and author rights for the pilot can be viewed here http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/lisrights.asp.
