How to use the Little book of public libraries

The Little book of public libraries is ...

  • Fresh and appealing
  • A light and easily digestible summary of all that is great about public libraries
  • Something over and above your own library promotional material - it's an expression of all Australian public libraries uniting behind common themes

It assumes that people have very little time and just want the headlines.

It's deliberately written in a language that's aligned with government priorities but easily appreciated by people from a non-library, non-governmental background.

Give copies to ...

  • Your staff
  • Your friends group
  • Your contacts in local government
  • Your MP and opposition candidates
  • The principal, teachers and teacher-librarian in all the schools and kindergartens in your area
  • Priests, vicars and other religious leaders
  • Local doctors, to put in their waiting rooms
  • Maternal and child health nurses
  • The Centrelink office
  • Every local group that uses your library
  • People of standing in your community (and why not ask them to become a Public Library Ambassador at the same time?)

How you might use it ...

  • As a standard script for you and your library staff when presenting your service to outsiders
  • To go with any management report or budget submission
  • As an enclosure with letters to important contacts - (here is a template letter you may wish to use)
  • In the information pack for distinguished library visitors, especially those who are simply using the premises as a venue
  • As a standalone gift for anyone who would be a good advocate for libraries

But don't put a stack of Little books on the information desk for free distribution unless you're prepared to see them disappear very quickly.

How we will be using it ...

ALIA will be including the Little book in the delegate packs for the Public Libraries Summit and sending copies to our contacts in every relevant federal government department.
