Public libraries return on investment study

Libraries: a better investment than gold

ALIA, on behalf of a consortium of state and territory libraries, asked SGS Economics to work out the benefits of public libraries to communities and to the economy. SGS found that for every $1 invested in Australian public libraries, there was a return of $2.90. SGS also discovered that the larger the investment was, the larger the benefits were for the community.

Library buildings and services helped support nearly 31 000 jobs nationally. Libraries spent more than $3 billion on products and services. SGS estimates that there is a net annual benefit of nearly $2 billion generated by libraries.
