Continuing professional development

The dynamic environment of the library and information sector dictates the need for library and information professionals to remain flexible and adaptable to change. To meet this need, they have a responsibility to demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning by ensuring that their knowledge, competencies and skills meet the needs of their employers and the clients of the services which they offer.

Similarly, employers have a responsibility to provide opportunities for library and information professionals to keep their skills, knowledge and competencies up-to-date.

Continuing professional development includes many forms of learning experiences which seek to increase knowledge, develop professional skills and attributes, and broaden the range of vocational competencies. These forms include formal education and training courses, informal learning activities, workplace learning, seminars, presentations and service activities.

The Australian Library and Information Association will: provide strategies for members to plan and undertake CPD, formally recognise those members choosing to participate in ALIA's professional development certification scheme; and facilitate forums where knowledge can be created, shared and disseminated and in this way collaboratively contribute to the professional development of its members.
