Ambassadors Peter Helliar, Dervla McTiernan and Will Kostakis join a stellar cast of authors
YouTube Live Premier Event, at 12:30pm AEDT on Wednesday 11th November 2020
Australia Reads is an important campaign supported by the whole book industry, running from the 1st to the 12th November to unite the nation to pick up a book and discover the joys of reading. Australia Reads is excited to announce a series of virtual events and invite everyone to join this celebration of reading and commit to read for an hour on the day of Australian Reading Hour on Thursday 12th November 2020. Australia Reads Ambassadors Peter Helliar and Dervla McTiernan will appear with a cast of authors who will share why they love reading and how it improves their lives, how they make time for reading, and some insight into their creative writing processes. The broadcast will feature Peter FitzSimons, Nikki Gemmell, Judy Nunn and Michael Robotham, to name just a few.
The Australia Reads main event broadcast will take place as a YouTube Live Premier Event at 12:30pm AEDT on Wednesday 11th November, leading us into the day of Australian Reading Hour on Thursday November 12th. We encourage everybody to participate and pick up a book for one hour to read for themselves or with a loved one, on that day.
The Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP said the Australian Government is pleased to have contributed $100,000 to the Australia Reads and Australia Reads at Home campaigns.
'The book industry consistently demonstrates its resilience as technological developments rapidly transform trends in publishing, book buying, reading devices and readers' habits," Minister Fletcher said. 'Reading brings people together, whether in a book club or at children’s bed-time. It provides a window into what the most perceptive minds of previous generations have thought and felt. I am encouraged that people are returning to books and hope they will continue to do so."
Adam Suckling CEO Copyright Agency says, 'the Copyright Agency's Cultural Fund proudly supports Australia Reads and the Australian book industry in this campaign to promote and encourage reading. Now more than ever we need to read great books by Australian writers and to celebrate life through these stories'.
Louise Sherwin-Stark, Australia Reads Chair says, 'Australian have turned to books for escape, comfort and company this year. Many have rediscovered the joys and benefits of reading and new reading habits are being formed. The book industry has seen surging book sales and impressive borrowing rates to meet this renewed interest in reading. There has never been a better time to promote and celebrate reading and we hope that our three virtual events will inspire all Australians to pick up a book'.
In addition to this main event, there will also be two special streams for schools in collaboration with the Sydney Opera House on Monday 9th November. One for children aged 7 to 10 focuses on why reading is fun, while young adults aged 11 to 13 will be encouraged to read, and connect with others to reduce feelings of isolation, particularly in these difficult times. These events will feature Australia Reads Ambassadors Peter Helliar, Jacqueline Harvey, Anna Fienberg, Beck Feiner and Will Kostakis, along with a star-studded line up of authors including Andy Griffiths, Garth Nix, Amie Kaufmann, Cath Moore, Sami Bayly, Danielle Binks and many more.
