ALIA Member Survey 2008

A message from the ALIA President

In 2008, ALIA engaged Insync Surveys to conduct a survey of its members.

The purposes of the survey were to

  • provide ALIA with a way to identify key member concerns
  • identify, prioritise and manage the key issues affecting members
  • provide members with the opportunity to communicate openly and honestly with the management team of ALIA

The member survey covered our services, sought member views on value for money, and explored the expectations of respondents to both the Association and the library and information profession in general.

The survey was extremely successful. There were 983 responses received from 3199 questionnaires sent to personal members (response rate 31%) and 171 responses received from 452 questionnaires sent to institutional members (response rate 38%). The individual member survey in particular has a very high confidence level.

Our aim now is to take the survey results forward into new and improved services and activities that help our Association meet the needs of our members and the wider profession.

The summary outcomes of the survey are available on this page, and we will be providing more information soon on some of the key findings. In the meantime, the ALIA Board of Directors and staff would like to thank all the participating members for their contribution to the survey, and to thank Katy Watson and the Membership and Awards Standing Committee, Robyn Ellard from national office, and Insync Surveys for making it a success.

We will continue to demonstrate our commitment to responding to the survey by thoroughly reviewing the results and outlining some key strategic priorities and future actions that can be driven from these results.

You will find a breakdown of the survey results in the reports available on this webpage.

Best wishes, Derek
President, Australian Library and Information Association
