Membership Categories and Fees

Associate (professional)

Members in this category hold an ALIA-recognised library and information science qualification at under-graduate or post-graduate levels. They are entitled to receive a certificate of Associate membership, and may use the post-nominal letters AALIA while a financial member of ALIA. They are also entitled to membership of the professional development scheme.

Library technician (professional)

Members in this category hold an ALIA-recognised library technician qualification. A library technician member receives a certificate of technician membership, and is entitled to use the post-nominal letters ALIATec while a financial member of the Association. They are also entitled to membership of the professional development scheme.

Member

All interested individuals, including those studying towards a library and information science qualification, may join ALIA as a member. No qualifications are required.

Membership administration fee $50 for new, upgrading or rejoining Associate or Library Technician Members

Personal Memberships run for 12 months starting with the month of application.

Full fee applies to persons whose gross personal income for the financial year is more than $30 000.
Reduced fee applies to persons whose gross personal income for the financial year is $30 000 or less, and Health Care Card holders. It also applies to graduates for their first two years in the profession after graduating from an ALIA accredited course.
Student/retired fee applies to full-time enrolled students, and persons who are over 55 and have retired from employment.

Institutional Memberships run for 12 months starting with the month of application.

There are six grades of institutional membership [C1 to C6] and membership fees vary according to the non-salary budget of the library and information service within your institution. A full breakdown is available on our membership fee tables.

Institutional membership of ALIA is available to all library and information organisations and corporations that serve the library and information community in Australia.

Upgrading membership
If you're currently an ALIA member and you've just graduated or completed your course, please notify us by completing our upgrade form and send it to us along with a copy of your qualification or a transcript of your course if your qualification has yet to be conferred. A one off administration fee also applies.

Overseas assessment of qualifications
Information for applicants with other overseas library and information qualifications: To work in the library and information sector in Australia you will need to have your overseas qualifications assessed. Download a copy of the ALIA Overseas Assessment form here. All sections and required documentation must be completed and payment submitted before the application can be processes. Widened eligibility
If you have completed a course in library and information studies which is not recognised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), you can be assessed for either Associate (Librarian) or Library Technician membership of the Association through the Association's widened eligibility process. Assessment is on an individual basis. The assessment considers your qualifications, knowledge of library and information services, relevant employment and continuing education. Allied fields
Graduates in the allied fields of records management, archives, and computing studies whose qualifications are recognised by their professional body may be admitted to associate membership of ALIA. They may then use the post-nominals AALIA(RecMan), AALIA(Arch) or AALIA(CS) respectively.

Associate fellow
Members in this self-nominating category have demonstrated current professional or technical and personal knowledge and skills, and have a significant degree of autonomy in their decision-making in practice. To qualify for Associate fellow, the applicant must demonstrate:

  • a minimum of five years associate or library technician membership of ALIA;
  • continuity of participation in the professional development scheme - compliance for at least the previous five years; and
  • current employment in the Australian library and information sector or an allied sector.

Associate fellows may use the post-nominal AFALIA or AFALIATec.
