Europeana: digital paintings, books, films and archives
Europeana – the European digital library, museum and archive – is a 2-year project that began in July 2007. It will produce a prototype website giving users direct access to some 2 million digital objects, including film material, photos, paintings, sounds, maps, manuscripts, books, newspapers and archival papers. The prototype was launched in November 2008. PLEASE NOTE: That the Europeana.eu site launched on the 20 November attracted a huge number of users - 10 million hits an hour! - which meant it crashed. The site owners are doing their best to reopen Europeana.eu in a more robust version. Meanwhile, you can visit the project development site, where there's a video to give you a taste of what's on the real Europeana site. Unfortunately this project site is only in English: the real Europeana is in all EU languages. Go to:

Debate on the Future of Public Libraries
In an online world, libraries should – more than ever - be at the very heart of our communities, UK Culture Secretary Andy Burnham said, as he launched a modernisation review of England’s public library service in October 2008. The review will be led by Culture Minister Barbara Follett, and will take place over the next six months. A full report, including specific action points, will then be published for wider consultation. It will look at the key issues facing the sector and raised by the public, including: * How do we make sure that libraries deliver what the public wants in the future - what will get people through the door? And how do we make sure that libraries are open when the public want to use them? * How do we make sure that library staff have the skills to deliver a modern service? * How will libraries cope with the growth of the ebook? * How do we make sure libraries have the investment they need to modernise? Is part of this about looking at new ways of delivering - such as a shared site with a swimming pool or GP’s surgery? * Should libraries offer more shared learning – be that book groups, Spanish lessons or family history research? * And, linked to that, should libraries be silent places for reading? Or should they be social places for people to meet and discuss, perhaps with coffee shops or internet cafes? Read more at:

MYLANGUAGE Wins National Technology Award
MYLANGUAGE, an internet portal that delivers in any language, wins national technology award! [Media Release 25-11-08] An internet solution, devised by most of the Australia's major libraries, to meet the exploding demand for multilingual information has won a national technology award. MyLangauge, an internet portal designed to deliver information and back-up library services with innovative electronic techniques was named as a winner of the Technology Category of the National Multicultural Marketing Awards in Sydney. Traditionally Australian library services have been available in only 49 languages whereas there are 212 languages in active use in the community. The libraries of each state and territory set out to meet that challenge collectively and came up with the MyLangauge portal whose vision is to: * Enhance, and facilitate the use of the internet by and for culturally and linguistically diverse communities * Empower newly arrived migrants, emerging communities and minority language communities to use online technologies * And, to enrich Australias linguistic and cultural cyberspace Apart from the traditional marketing tools of banners and bookmarks, the Libraries let their campaign loose on YouTube, offering 30 native speakers of languages other than English the chance to be video stars while promoting MyLangauge to the world. Congratulating the Libraries collective on the award, the Chair of the Community Relations Commission, Stepan Kerkyasharian said This is not just about a good idea or a good solution it is also about clever marketing techniques that actually uses the resources of cultural diversity to promote a service that is meeting diversity needs. Look, this is a marvellous gateway to information. Within a couple of simple clicks you have access to almost unlimited information, superbly catalogued in which ever language you want to use. This gives all Australians instant access to whatever information they need in day to day life. This is all about ensuring that technology doesn't further restrict people of non-English speaking background from finding information and getting access to resources and, conversely, that it actually improves their access. This project is right in line with the original aim of the National Multicultural Marketing Awards to alert public servants to their responsibility and obligation to communicate their services to each member of the community and to ensure that those services were also appropriate to those same people. The great libraries of the states and territories of Australia have done just that. Well done! Mr Kerkyasharian said.

Cultural Funding in Australia: Three Tiers of Government 2006–07
Cultural Funding in Australia Three Tiers of Government 2006–07 indicates federal, state, territory and local government funding for cultural activities was $5.6 billion, an increase of 2.6 per cent in 2006–07. Broadcasting and film, including funding for radio and television services, film and video and multimedia, continued to be the largest recipient of funds, receiving combined federal/state/territory funding of over $1.2 billion in 2006–07. This was a 2.0 per cent increase on 2005–06. Public libraries received $1.0 billion from the three tiers of government with more than half of that, $619.7 million, coming from local government. The Cultural Funding in Australia: Three Tiers of Government 2006–07 report is produced by the National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics of the Australian Bureau of Statistics for publication by the Cultural Ministers Council Statistics Working Group. The publication is the thirteenth in a series of reports which provide information on cultural funding by each level of government in Australia. It is available for downloading from:

Standards And Guidelines: an E-directory (SAGE) - Exposure Draft
The Collections Council is pleased to announce the launch of the SAGE Exposure Draft. SAGE is an acronym for ‘Standards And Guidelines: an E-directory’, an online directory intended to provide up-to-date and reliable information to assist collecting organisations identify standards and guidelines that meet their specific needs. The SAGE Exposure Draft contains a preliminary selection of key resources. These are not intended to represent all significant resources, but provide a starting point from which, with your input, we can create a more comprehensive and responsive list of useful standards and guidelines. Please note: SAGE currently contains an over-representation of resources relating to digital collections, due to our efforts to ensure all standards and guidelines included in the Collection Council's Digital Standards Bibliography, Version 2.0, are also included in SAGE. At this stage, not all of these resources have been evaluated. We hope to assess these as time and resources become available. We are now calling for your suggestions for additional resources, comments on existing resources and observations on the functionality of the site. In particular, we are interested in your response to the following questions: * Did you find the site easy to use? Easy to understand? * Are there any standards or guidelines that should be added to SAGE? * Do you have any comments or amendments to make to the evaluation notes provided for one or more of the existing standards? Please email us at projects@collectionscouncil.com.au by 31 December 2008.
