ALIAnet home pageThe Australian Library and Information Association offers, amongst other things, a service combining the ALIA World Wide Web server, a list server, and a dial-in facility for personal ALIA members to access the internet. ALIAnet was officially launched by the governor-general of Australia on 17 March 1995. In his speech, he paid tribute to ALIA and libraries in general for the way in which they have been at the forefront of adapting to changes that are occurring as a result of the information revolution. The initial assembly of ALIAnet was funded jointly by ALIA and the then ALIA ACT Branch (now ALIA ACTive). Generous assistance in setting up ALIAnet was provided by a number of people and organisations, including, amongst others, Sun Microsystems and Cisco Systems. Recognised as the first Australian Association to construct its own internet presence, ALIAnet has been running continuously since 1995, and always as an independent internet service and content provider.
We offer a range of features across the site, from webcards (send a webcard to a friend, use a webcard to lobby your local parliamentarian) to online surveys, from calendars of events to a members-only site Those with an interest in how many hits we receive may care to look at our log file archive. We've also written a word or two about the various systems in operation, and the requirement to have a range of passwords to access different services on ALIAnet. |
