NetAlert and ALIA join forces to educate the community about internet safety in public libraries

NetAlert today joined with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) in supporting and educating the community about the safe use of the internet, with the launch of the National Library Project. The project forms part of NetAlert's contribution to Library and Information Week. The National Library Project will provide a range of materials to assist librarians and library users in using the internet safely at public libraries.

'Many children access the internet from public libraries. NetAlert and ALIA have developed a range of materials to educate and assist librarians in implementing effective internet safety strategies for young library users and their carers,' Karyn Hart, NetAlert's chair, said today.

Participating libraries will receive a copy of the Librarian's guide to internet safety and an internet safety tip card for display next to internet terminals. Libraries will also have access to web-based resources at http://www.netalert.net.au/02018-Library.asp from 30 May 2005.

'These materials will ensure that children are able to enjoy their internet experience, in safety, at the library. Librarians offer a range of services for library users to develop their information skills and ALIA is delighted to be working with NetAlert on this project,' Dr Gillian Hallam, president of ALIA said.

To further increase awareness of internet safety issues, NetAlert will work with librarians in both public and school libraries as part of its National Road Show.

The National Road Show, which begins in July, will visit schools, libraries, and community centres in each state and territory over the next two years. Through the National Road Show’s seminars parents, teachers, and librarians will receive education and training on internet safety issues.

'In order to ensure childrens' safety online, NetAlert will continue to partner with organisations such as ALIA in NetAlert’s projects such as the National Library Project and the National Road Show,' Ms Hart said.

NetAlert is Australia's internet safety advisory body. It was established by the Australian Government in late-1999, to provide independent advice and education on managing access to and usage of the internet. NetAlert works closely with a variety of bodies, at both a national and international level, in order to promote the safety of children on the internet.
