Information profession in the 21st century

A stimulating program of national and international speakers covering issues of critical importance to all information professionals will be presented next week in Canberra.

The ALIA 2000 Biennial Conference of the Australian Library and Information Association runs from 23-26 October 2000 at the National Convention Centre. The umbrella theme of Capitalising on knowledge - the information profession in the 21st century will provide the scope to examine who will be the information providers as this new century unfolds, and on what basis.

Key speakers include:

Paul Twomey, chief executive officer of the National Office for the Information Economy

Senator Kate Lundy, shadow minister assisting on Information Technology

Sir Anthony Mason, former chief justice of the High Court of Australia, and chairman of the National Library of Australia [1995-1998]

Geoff Huston, chief scientist in the internet area for Telstra and member of the Internet Architecture Board

José-Marie Griffiths, University of Michigan chief information officer

Donald King, statistician and past-president of King Research
