ALIA Library Technician of the Year

A Queenslander working in a mining information centre has won the national award of ALIA Library Technician of the Year.

She is Helen Pickers, who works at the Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station at Redbank. Her work includes collection maintenance, reference work, staff training and monitoring electronic information systems which require Y2K compliance. (Y2K is the problem older computer systems have in recognising the change to the year 2000).

Ms Pickers has also made significant contributions to the library profession for the past 19 years, giving conference papers, organising promotional events and participating in the setting of professional competency standards.

The award is presented by the peak professional body, the Australian Library and Information Association.
