Aboriginal communities linked to the world

In her Australian Library Week oration on 29 April, Dr Lois O'Donoghue spoke of the importance of the Internet to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as a means of projecting accurate information about themselves to the world.

She mentioned ALIA's initiative known as 'Indigenous Communities Online', funded through the Federal Government's Online Public Access Initiative (OPAI).

Five remote communities have been involved in the initiative and three of them now have operative websites.

They are:

Santa Teresa, Northern Territory [http://www1.taunet.net.au/apurte/]

Koonibba, SA http://www.indiginet.com.au/koonibba/

Umoona, SA http://www.indiginet.com.au/umoona/

Media representatives may like to check out the sites, which also provide e-mail addresses for follow-up communication.
