The Information Resource Centre, Carey Baptist Grammar School
New build or refurbishment: New build
Project completed: 01/07/2016
The Information Resource Centre supports teaching and learning at Carey Baptist Grammar School's Kew Campus Middle School (Years 7-9) and Senior School (Years 10-12) which together comprise 1,300 students and 220 staff. They action the school's goal of using positive education to develop students who are wise, independent, motivated learners with a particular focus on best practice teaching and learning with information and literature.
The Centre's team of three teacher librarians and four library technicians works closely with ICT and eLearning teams to ensure that physical and digital spaces are a dynamic part of the School's learning architecture. Close relationships with curriculum leaders build information literacy and quality resource use into the context of discipline learning. Carey's vibrant reading culture is driven by wide reading classes within English learning in years 7 to 10, and celebrated annually with a whole school literature festival.
With research showing that students enjoy and flourish in a library environment where they are enabled to function as independent learners with support at each new stage, the staff-user interface emphasises educating and guiding rather than a 'behind-the-counter' service style.
