ALIA URLs (ACT) [urlsact]

ALIA URLs (ACT), (Universities and Research Libraries’ Group), provides a networking and information-sharing forum for all levels of library staff interested in issues and trends affecting the development of university and research libraries. The group organises professional development and training opportunities and provides a network of communication and support. ALIA URLs aims to enhance inter-institutional information exchange within the region, and liaises with other relevant organisations. Planned activities include seminars, monthly meetings with guest speakers, and workshops on topics relevant to the sector.

Where: Hancock Library, ANU
For: Drinks and nibbles on the balcony and at 5.30pm private tour is on offer of the undergraduate teaching building, part of the Colleges of Science Project at ANU - http://facilities.anu.edu.au/PropertyandBuildings/index.html, teaching areas level 2 west Hancock Library as well as the social zone level 3.
Our tour guide for the teaching areas will be Simon Foxcroft, User Coordinator for the project.

Libraries and Learning Spaces: Embracing Changing Needs

Libraries everywhere are juggling the competing demands of digital resources and print collections, group study spaces and quiet zones, social media and mobile technologies. How can libraries support and enhance student learning while balancing expectations of 24/7 access via smartphones and social media sites? Come and hear how academic teaching and learning is evolving and how a number of innovative libraries have configured their spaces and services to meet the needs of 21st century library users.

E-Books Seminar – 17 June 2008

The ALIA URLs (ACT) Group held an informative half-day seminar to share experiences and learn from others about acquiring and managing e-books in library collections.

Bob Pymm provided an overview to the seminar, followed by a talk by Linda Wright from a publisher's perspective (James Bennett). Speakers from the Australian Catholic University (Kate Bunker for Heather Pearsall), UNSW@ADFA (Christine Fulton) and the ACT Library and Information Service (Sarah Steed) also shared information that they have gained from their experience with e-books, particularly in relation to technical and access issues, budgeting challenges and marketing implications.

Career Development Workshop – 11 May 2009

The workshop provided participants with a broad overview of the state of the library and information management sector, as well as sharing some insights into the career development experiences of previous and current library and information workers. Another focal point for the day's activities was on personal review/analysis at the individual level in regards to progressing one's career development. Program
