ALIA Top End [topend]

Graduate mentoring program

Over the past year ALIA Top End has been conducting a mentoring training group aimed at easing the transition of newly qualified professionals into the workplace. The program is to be offered in 2003. So - calling all impending graduates! Read on and you might find that the graduate mentoring program will be of benefit to you.

What is the graduate mentoring program?

Provides a forum for new library and information graduates to come together and discuss issues, ideas and topics of interest that they have in common. Everything from getting that first job to establishing and maintaining your professional profile. The group is led by facilitators who can offer the benefit of their experience, but the exact focus of the meetings is determined by the group participants.

Who will be in the group?

ALIA Top End graduate mentoring program will consist of new graduates from the courses offered in library and information science in the Northern Territory. ALIA membership is required. If you are not currently a member you are still welcome, but you must undertake to join ALIA over the period of the program.

What does the group hope to achieve?

The purpose of the mentoring program is to help ease the transition process for new graduates starting in the workplace and the profession. You will benefit from the knowledge and experience offered by the facilitators, plus be able to offer the group the value of your own experience as you begin your career. All this takes place in a supportive and encouraging environment. There is an emphasis on developing your peer support networks. There are also practical benefits as the facilitators will introduce you to their networks and contacts when appropriate.

Who facilitates the group meetings?

The 2002/2003 program will be facilitated by participants of the mentoring training group. Other experienced members of the profession will be called upon to assist in response to particular needs identified by the group.

Where and when will the group meet?

The group will meet monthly during 2003/2004 at locations to be decided by the group. Meetings (usually a duration of 1.5 hours) will take place early in the evening - the dates of the meetings will also be determined by the group. The first meeting will be held on 17 March 2003 at Casuarina Public Library.
