ALIA Top End
Meeting minutes
26 April 2006 Northern Territory Library, Darwin
1. Present: Linda Marchesani, Sue Chilman, Jayshree Mamtora, Dianne Glasson, Ann Ritchie, Julie Adams, Liam Casey, Sarah Manning, Heather Tangey, Di Sinclair, Leonie Whiting .
2. Apologies: Ana Govan, Stephen Barnett, Ruth Quinn, Giselle Pryer, Sarah White, Dianne Wilcox, Frieda Evans.
3.1 Management
3.1.1: 70 ALIA members are listed as being part of the Top End Group. A list of members is now easily obtainable from ALIA. Linda will check the list to see if there are other local people who aren't members of the Top End Group but wish to be so.
Details of subscribing to groups and elists will be in the next publication of Interface.
3.1.2: The end of year Christmas function will also be the host event for the inaugural welcome and congratulations to library and information graduates from throughout the past year. ALIA will acknowledge any student, from diploma level upwards (ie diploma, degree, graduate, masters, PHD) who has graduated from any institution during the year. More details will appear in the next Interface newsletter.
People who are eligible for an ALIA Silver Pin will also be rewarded for their hard work on ALIA committees, at this event. More details coming soon.
3.1.3: Sue Chilman was successful in her application for the Group Support Officer. Congratulations Sue. Due to perceived conflict of interest Sue has vacated her position as Treasurer.
Leonie Whiting, who was the second nominee for Treasurer has taken up this vacant position. Congratulations Leonie.
3.1.4: Update on ALIA board members by Ann Ritchie. Roxanne Missingham will become the new Vice President. There are three new board members: Helen Partridge, Michelle Brennard and Philip Keane.
3.1.5: The Centralian Group, based in Alice Springs has had a name change to Red Centre ALIA. They are putting in a bid to host the 2008 ALIA conference. The Top End group has sent a letter of support. Anyone wishing to join the organising committee to assist the Red Centre group, please contact the Red Centre group of Linda Marchesani.
3.2 Professional Development
3.2.1: Liam gave a symposium update. The organising committee is Jill Heffernan, Kathy Ryan, Frieda Evans, Rachael Wellstead, Peter Walton, and Liam Casey.
Contact Liam if you are interested in helping out. The theme will be The future of libraries in the Northern Territory: Where are we heading? Exact wording is yet to be decided on. Date is Friday the 13 and Saturday the 14 of October.
The venue is CDU Palmerston campus.
3.2.2: Still waiting on information from National Office about the Power Searching Workshop. At this stage it looks like the level 1 workshop will be on the 22 of June and the more advanced session on the 23 of June. It will be approximately $400.00 for ALIA members. Still finding out if this can be invoiced in the new financial year. CDU will provide the venue.
3.3 Events and Activities
3.3.1: The ALIA meeting during Library and Information Week will be held at the new Palmerston public library. There will be a tour of the library from 5 - 6.
Then a panel discussion by the VITeLs group. Each library manager will describe there career and provide mentoring, encouragement and practical advice to other library workers and students. A dinner at the Karawa Restaurant, will follow at 7. Cost is $25.00 for a three course meal. Money needs to be paid to the restaurant by Friday 19 of May. Phone the restaurant on 8946 7904.
ALIA Top End will approach VITeLs to see if they are interested in hosting a stall at the Casuarina shopping centre.
An ALIA news feature will be written for the NT News. It will be a profile of a notable person describing how libraries have changed their lives.
3.3.2: Dagmar Schmidaier, the President of ALIA will be visiting Darwin.
Possible date is the 8 and 9 of June, although other dates will be discussed with her. Ann Ritchie describes her as a change agent so want to make the most of her visit. Looking at asking her to present a formal presentation on her background and visions for ALIA, followed by a question and answer session.
Discussed holding a cocktail reception aimed at the minister, and employers.
Will discuss the idea of her presenting workshops or interactive sessions, possibly on leadership or how to address issues facing library workers in the NT. If you have ideas for her visit please contact Linda Marchesani.
3.3.3: Palmerston City Council will accept ALIA Top Ends commemorative gift for Lyn McIntosh. Now deciding on the best positioning of the artwork.
3.3.4: ALIA Top End wishes to explore educational issues in the Northern Territory. It is envisaged that this will take the form of an Education Forum similar to one that ALIA conducted in the ACT. Julie Adams, Leonie Whiting and Sarah Manning will organise this. Anyone else interested in educational issues and wanting to join the organising committee, please contact Julie.
3.4 Communication
3.4.1 The next issue of Interface will be published by the next meeting in May.
