ALIA Top End

Meeting minutes

6:15 18 June 2003

  1. Present: Robin Hempel (Chair), Larraine Shepherd, Giselle Pryer, Debbie Weekes, Melanie Bennett, Mary-Louise Detering, Ann Ritchie, Jayshree Mamtora, Felicity Williams.

    Apologies: Sarah White, Linda Winzar, Stelios Podias, Kira Paznikov Barry, Dianne Wilcox, Ruth Quinn, Darlene Lion.
  2. Confirmation of Previous Minutes:
    Confirmation of minutes of meeting held 21 May 2003. Accepted by Larraine Shepherd and seconded by Robin Hempel.
  3. Business Arising
    3.1 NT Libraries Census funding application. No further progress: Larraine asked if work on the census and directory could be combined. Jayshree had made the same suggestion at the March meeting but had been told that it wasn't feasible as the two are quite different. However it was agreed that as long as the purpose of the census was not lost, criteria for the directory could be incorporated. A group to update the Directory was set up: Larraine Shepherd (Chair), Ann Ritchie, Robin Hempel, Kira Paznikov Barry, Jayshree Mamtora (after 13 September).
    This Group to meet before next monthly meeting.

    3.2 GLIS Update: Robin responded briefly to queries from members. A Consultative Committee had been set up to look at the GLIS situation and a new service model was currently being drawn up. Robin Hempel, as Convenor, agreed to contact Silvia Langford, Deputy Chief Executive of the Department of Community Development, Sport and Cultural Affairs and/or Mary Teague, Director NTLIS to brief ALIA Top End members.

    4.1 Update: No items
  5. CPD Activities
    5.1 Information Literacy Symposium: Jayshree reported that the Committee had made good progress. Prue Mercer,Convenor, ALIA Information Literacy Forum and Manager, Services, State Library of Victoria had been confirmed as Keynote speaker. A reminder notice that abstracts were due 30 June would be sent out shortly. A Registration form had been designed and was to be sent out to ALIA HQ for mounting on our website. Linda and Sarah have been working on the sponsorships. NTU Library had confirmed it would offer two scholarships for LIS students, one for TAFE and the other for BLIM student.

    5.2 ASLA/CBC/English teacher's October function: The group was to meet at Leanyer School. Felicity to send details to Robin. A joint Christmas function with ALAITE was also proposed.
  6. Mentoring Program
    A meeting had just taken place focussing on Selection Criteria with Ruth Quinn and Stelios Podias as guest speakers. Ann Ritchie asked if the group could be allowed to attend the next ALIA meeting (16 July) as their next theme was professional associations. A request was also made for members of the group to have some involvement with the Symposium.
  7. Support for Isolated and Remote members
    Robin Hempel to work with Symposium sponsorship group to look into obtaining funding to enable a remote member to attend the Symposium.
  8. NT Awards: No Items
  9. Commincation and Networking
    9.1 Kaye Bartlett has resigned as Editor of Interface. Robin and Kira to work on putting out an issue before the Symposium.
  10. Directory: See 3.1
  11. Other Business
    11.1 Group Secretary position. Linda was ready to hand over the position so a new Secretary was being sought. A notice was to be placed in Interface as well as on the e-list.

    11.2 Itinerants Project: The Northern Land Council, Larrakia Nation and government representatives had set up this project. Robin attended a meeting with them as a representative of NTLIS and ALIATE.
    Robin committed ALIATE to support the project by putting up displays for NAIDOC Week as well as other related activities.

    11.3 @ your library: ALIATE had agreed to assist with supporting this campaign to promote libraries.

    Next meeting: Wednesday 16 July, 5:00pm. Venue TBA.
