ALIA Top End

Meeting minutes

Cornucopia Café, Museum and Art Gallery of the NT, Fannie Bay, 12:00pm 21 May 2003

  1. Present: Robin Hempel (chair), Kira Paznikov Barry (minutes), Ruth Quinn, Larraine Shepherd, Jayshree Mamtora, Pat Whalan, Stelios Podias, Julie Adams, Jennifer Whalan, Julie Fawcett, Jan Jones.

  2. Confirmation of Previous Minutes:
    Confirmation of minutes of meeting held 16 April 2003. Accepted by Ruth Quinn. Seconded by Kira Paznikov Barry.
  3. Business Arising
    3.1 NT Libraries Census- funding application: Robin Hempel confirmed that she is working on a funding application, and will be assisted by Georgina Dale (ALIA National office) and Kira Paznikov Barry. ALIA National office will be contacted for funding. Robin has undertaken some research as part of the NT Census profiles, looking at Litchfield Shire, and East Arnhem. Once census profiles have been completed, discrepancies will be evident. Comments will be encouraged.

    3.2 ASLA- letter: Robin Hempel stated that a date was needed for the joint ASLA/ALIA Top End meeting. ALIA Top End/ASLA is assisting in lobbying the 'over establishment' issue here in the Northern Territory, which has been conducive to greater teaching workloads for teacher/librarians. Robin Hempel will continue liasing with ASLA.

    3.3 Library and Information Week Report: Robin Hempel confirmed that 'The Great Debate' jointly hosted by NTLIS and ALIA Top End was also a 'great' success, and gave an overview of the speakers and the evening in general (copies of article sent to Incite attached). NTL also conduct a very successful 'Internet for Beginners' Program. A brief verbal report of activities at Darwin Public Libraries was given by Stelios Podias: ('Power Your Mind at Darwin Libraries' attached). Ruth Quinn reported on the 'Library to Library Interpretative Walk', a joint activity sponsored between Palmerston, NTU Campus Library and Palmerston Public Library. Ian Hutton, Lecturer in Tour Operations, Palmerston Campus led the walk between the two libraries with17 people (14 adults and 3 children) participating. After the walk, refreshments were provided by Palmerston Campus Library. A brief tour of the library was provided and a display of books featuring NT flora and fauna was displayed. All participants enjoyed the walk and provided very positive feedback.

    4.1 Update: No items
  5. CPD Activities
    5.1 Information Literacy Symposium - Jayshree Mamtora: The first notice has been finalised. Suggestions for keynote speakers are: Judy Peacock (Information Literacy Co-ordinator at Queensland University of Technology), Pru Mercer, and Ralph Halt. Dates for the two half day sessions are 12 and 13 September 2003. The venue at this stage will be NTU, Palmerston Campus. There will be two fees, one for members- $50.00 and $75.00 for non-members, which includes morning and afternoon tea, plus cocktails on the Friday afternoon. NTU is considering offering two scholarships for attendance (one to a TAFE, one to a Higher Education student). Jayshree asked that the event be publicised widely, via Incite and the e-list.

    5.2 ASLA/CBCA/English teacher's function-planning: Robin Hempel noted that activity was underway.
  6. Mentoring
    6.1 Update: Robin Hempel and Stelios Podias gave an overview of the mentoring program so far. Several mentorees helped at The Great Debate. Next meeting is scheduled for mid June.
  7. Support for Isolated and Remote members
    7.1 Sponsorship for symposium: No items.
  8. NT Awards
    8.1 Student Awards- winner announcement: Robin Hempel announced that the winner was Narelle Goodrem. Robin noted that the award was richly deserved as Narelle had worked very hard, set very high standards and continues to be a great role model and promoter of libraries.
  9. Commincation and Networking
    9.1 Newsletter: Kaye Bartlett is editor. First issue for the year is yet to be published.
  10. Directory
    10.1 Disk: The directory disk has still not been located.

    Motion: That ALIA Top End proceeds with the Directory immediately, without the disk.

    ACTION: Kira Paznikov Barry to investigate Australian Gateways information, and begin task of sending data sheets to libraries.
  11. Other Business
    11.1 GLIS update: Ruth Quinn asked what is happening with this issue.

    Motion: That Robin Hempel investigate this matter with details to be posted on e-list and/or invite Darlene? to a meeting with ALIA Top End.
