ALIA Top End

Meeting minutes

Northern Territory University Library, Palmerston Campus, Northern Territory, 5:00pm 16 April 2003

  • Guest Speaker: Mary Teague, Director NTLIS was the group's special guest and was invited to deliver a presentation on the role of NTLIS, its position within the Department of Community Development, Sport and Cultural Affairs and the implications of the NTLIS review - with time for questions.
  1. Present: Robin Hempel (chair), Sarah White (minutes), Shirley Shepherd, Jayshree Mamtora, Ruth Quinn, Felicity Williams, Peta Lazar, Ann Ritchie, Kira Paznikov Barry, Mary Teague.

  2. Confirmation of Previous Minutes:
    Confirmation of minutes held 19 March 2003. Accepted by Ruth Quinn. Seconded by Ann Ritchie.
  3. Business Arising
    3.1 Letter to Minister: Develop census on NT Library services; look at thesis; 2000 publication on libraries in NT. Liasing with NTLIS to gather information on the census. Robin Hempel has sourced some information.

    ACTION: Grant application through ALIA to undertake census of NT Libraries.

    3.2 Mary Teague visited and gave presentation.

    3.3 ASLA: Robin Hempel has not (as yet) written letter. Robin Hempel attended ASLA meeting, giving details: Proposed joint meeting of ALIA/ASLA/CBCA in October; date to be announced. Revealed that teacher/librarians are no longer viewed as 'over establishment' positions.

    3.4 Library and Information Week: ALIA Top End was approached to advertise the event in Darwin Sun, but refused due to lack of funding. NTLIS Great Debate: 'Are libraries cultural institutions?', taking place on 12 May. Minister for Local Government and Libraries, John Ah Kit, has been invited to be the adjudicator for the debate. The function is to be held at the NT Museum and Art Gallery theatrette at 7:30pm with refreshments at 7:00pm. Suggestions were tabled for possible debaters. ALIA banner to be displayed between 5-11 May at Gardens site at a cost of $27.00. Palmerston public library and NTU Palmerston campus are hosting a 'library to library walk'.

    ACTION: Kira Paznikov Barry to arrange for display of banner, and add event details to website.
  4. Budget
    No report submitted, but Dianne Willcox reports that there are no difficulties.
  5. CPD Activities
    5.1 Information Literacy Symposium: Jayshree updated on progress. Symposium group had their initial meeting and have decided on tentative dates of 12 and 13 September 2003. Issue in regards to 'staff release'. An official call for papers would be sent out. Linda Wiznar and Sarah White will work on sponsorship. Possible venues include Darwin City Council (capacity of 50) and NTU Palmerston campus (holds 75). Symposium fee may be on a sliding scale, including ALIA members, non-members, students, and day rates. Suggestions to the symposium group are appreciated.

    5.2 ASLA/CBC/English teacher's function-planning: Robin Hempel discussed the possibility of a joint meeting in October. Members to be invited to symposium and possibility of joint Christmas party.

    ACTION: Robin Hempel to raise these issues at next ASLA meeting.
  6. Mentoring
    6.1 Update: Ann Ritchie noted that at the last meeting, 9 mentorees were in attendance. Mention of inviting mentorees to an ALIA Top End meeting and debate for networking purposes. Mentorees interested in looking at how to meet selection criteria and interview techniques, in conjunction with learning of opportunities outside of libraries. Program is being designed to fulfil these needs.
  7. Support for Isolated and Remote members
    7.1 Idea of a scholarship for remote/isolated members to attend symposium in October.
  8. NT Awards
    8.1 Group awards status: Mention of educational awards for diploma and degree students. Group student awards not funded. Local group awards will proceed if 100 per cent funding is provided. National awards still proceeding. ALIA student award still funded; handled by head office. NTU student awards presented on 16 May 2003.
  9. Commincation and Networking
    9.1 Newsletter: Kay Bartlett will remain editor of 'Interface' which will continue in electronic format. Information to be included in the newsletter (articles etc) to be passed on to Kay.
  10. Directory
    10.1 Disk: Issue is continuing, with no new information as to whereabouts of disk.
  11. Other Business
    11.1 CBCA event
    11.2 Tita Allom from Batchelor Institute has been suggested to be a representative on ALIA Tafe committee.

    ACTION: Robin Hempel to write letter to Jaclyn to encourage Tita to apply. Recommend that Tita nominate with national group, as not role of this group to nominate.
